About Ringer Reef

Annie & Bruce’s story…

After working for the big companies for nearly 30 years, Bruce decided to get out of large production and see the other side of the industry. In 1996, Annie & Bruce Holm fell in love with Porepunkah in Victoria’s beautiful Alpine Valleys region and have never looked back since finding their 35 hectare property.

Upon discovering the property, Bruce had an overwhelming sense of tranquillity and knew that this was the place they would come to live and build a winery. So they purchased an old dairy farm covered in blackberries and spent 2 years clearing the property and planted their first vines in 1998. Since then, they have planted 13 varieties, with a focus on Italian & French. They opened their cellar door in 2006 and both work as a team doing everything from planting vines, picking, bottling, labelling, and running their cellar door.

Annie loves to meet people in cellar door and prepares beautiful handmade bread daily to serve alongside wine tastings and serves with local olive oil and dukkah. “I think people like coming here and seeing what we do and chatting to us, as well as tasting our wines – it’s a very different experience from bigger wineries,” says Bruce. “Often we see three generations here, including grandparents and grandchildren and it’s such a nice feeling when you see everyone enjoying what this region has to offer.”

The property ‘Ringer Reef’ was the name given to the gold mine owned by Merry and Hooper in the early 1890’s.  The gold rush played an important role in the Valley’s history, bringing with it not only wealth but also people rich in culture and diversity. Today, the mine lays dormant and provides crystal clear water supply to the property. With 10 acres under vine, the rows laid beautifully out across the hillside, the views are simply breathtaking. The front gate is conveniently situated on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, which makes a lovely cruise by bike along the Rail Trail from Bright, Ringer Reef being one of two cellar doors to visit in Porepunkah.

With the Ovens River only minutes from the winery, it makes for a glorious spot to pick up some goodies from cellar door and take to the water’s edge in the warmer months. Or from 12pm – 5pm daily you can sit on the terrace at the cellar door and soak in the views and watch the world go by. There is a large lawn area for picnic style gatherings, or for the kids to run around and play games.

In December 2016, Annie and Bruce's son Mark and his wife Julie joined the team at Ringer Reef.

Annie and Bruce, together with Mark and Julie look forward to welcoming you to their little slice of heaven, and sharing their passion for what they do and for their region.
